12th March 25. A very different car

Updated: Sep 24

After yesterday's drive in the M5. Today was a very different experience. But still one I enjoyed for very different reasons although the drive there was a pleasant journey. I couldn't find a return job so the journey home was a series of trains from Lincoln back to Aylesbury.

I was doing this job for a regular customer in Aylesbury .

This was a simple retail delivery of a 2022 registered MG5 EV to a customer in Lincoln. One reason to enjoy this today, is the fact that it's an EV and fully charged on collection so no need to charge on route. Always a welcome inclusion on any job.

The other is that most retail customers are delighted to be getting a new car. So the handover process is pleasing and seeing happy people is always a difference to a day usually full of miserable faces.

I actually like the feeling that driving an EV gives in that I'm not polluting the air that day. Yesterday I didn't care. Yes I'm a hypocrite!

I also know that EV's are probably more harmful to the environment given that most cars have a bigger carbon footprint during construction than they have in their lifetime of use. EV's even more so, due to the terrible use of lithium and other materials in the battery which at some point will be disposed of somewhere in the poor third world. But we don't care about this, right? RIGHT?

The MG5 was a very undervalued car. Estate cars seem to be dying a slow death. In fact, the new MG5 now MG S5 is a replacement for the ZS an SUV sized vehicle.

I quite like estate cars, proper estate cars. I remember driving a new Ford Granada estate in the late 80s . Massive thing it seemed at the time and you could play football in the back of it. Where have these cars gone?

The MG 5 Electric estate car Delivered

The MG drove well enough for what it is. Smooth quick when needed. And these days it's only needed at roundabouts or traffic lights for a quick short getaway.

It's not the quietest given it's electric and the road noise can get obtrusive. The tech also has a mind of it's own and MG haven't got that right on this car. Although the newer ones are better. The sat nav is something you need to get used to. I didn't bother and used Google maps on Android auto. This is another good tip. Use Android auto when you can. It saves you connecting your phone then having to delete it for handover to the customer.

Arrived at the customer and handed the car over. He needed no introduction to the car as had just had one the same, written off . There's one battery on its way to India.

This is something I never understand. Maybe I'm built different or brought up differently. But today was one of those customers. Not enthusiastic about the car at all.

If I had a new car delivered and I had nothing to do all day. Like this gentleman. Offering a lift to the station would be a nice thing to do and a chance to drive my new car. It happens sometimes and I guess people are different. So I don't complain. Just an observation.

It's not professional to mention or ask this so I note my observation and move on.

Finally got a taxi to rainy Lincoln station and started the long journey home.

This meant, from Lincoln to Newark Northgate station then getting the London bound train to Kings Cross. A quick underground flip on the Circle line to Baker Street then my favourite Bakerloo line to Marylebone and the train to Aylesbury.

Then my 20 minutes walk back clearing my head of the day before getting home.

A one job day so not financially great. But money made and move on.
